Introducing:

Our little blessing . . . Miss Katherine Leigh!   "Kate" was born September 11, 2012 at 11:08am weighing 7 lbs. 2 oz. and 20 inches long. We are proud, humbled, blessed, and already a little tired. ;)  Kate is more beautiful than we could have ever imagined!

Worry not, amazing readers.  There are many details to come.  I've been back-dating my ramblings, so read when you can, but I already have a lot to ramble from the last few days!

The (Non-) Nursery

I've been planning to write some fancy, well-worded blog post about our nursery but I'm unable to find the words.  Imagine that . . . The Rambler has no words.  However, I have no nursery either.

I'm not able to go in there and get anything started.  I just can't.  Lately, I've felt kind of hopeless about "that room."  For YEARS (longer than the 5.5 years we've been married), I have envisioned that room as our baby's nursery.  From the day I moved in this house until that dreaded day I had to let my kitty go, that was Mindy's room.  It's been my scrapbooking & craft room, but I haven't had the motivation to do that.  I can only scrapbook so much of Mr. & Mrs. Rambler, our family and our pets.  All I want to sew is baby stuff, but I'm scared to do that.

I asked DH if we could move his office in with mine & use his office for a nursery instead.  I like the layout of his office much better, but he doesn't want to excavate all his millions of piles of shit and other random crap do that.  So, for now, the room that should become a nursery for our imaginary baby is just a shithole full of stuff, a storage center, a place to dump things.  And I have a feeling it's going to stay that way for a while.  Well, at least until I have a true reason to do anything with it.

10 Things to Never Say to Your Childless Friends

A friend of mine shared the article linked below on FB.  It's a great article to remember and share with others.  Whether a friend is childless by choice or by "force" they don't need to be questioned, reassured, or bullied about it.  Although most people have good intentions, questions aren't always taken that way by those of us on the receiving end.  Thanks for the article, Anna Banana Bread.  I know you're always checking up on us here and cheering us along the way!  :)

Be sure to click the link for the full article.  I've only shared their list.

From Glo:  10 Things Never to Say to Your Childless Friends

1.  So when are you guys going to get started?
2. You'll understand when you're a mom.
3. Just relax.  You'll get pregnant in no time.
4. It must be nice to have time to read a book/go to the movies/have a romantic dinner.
5. I didn't invite you because there will be kids at the party.
6. Have you tried different sex positions/diets/doctors/wearing looser underwear?
7. Is your husband OK with you not wanting kids?
8. Your dog is your baby.
9. You'll change your mind about having kids in a few years.
10. Since you don't have kids, you can afford a new car/remodeling project/vacation.

And since this is MY blog, I'm adding one more:

11.  Have you heard anything about a baby?  Dude . . . you'll know when we do!!!!!

For Baby

Mr. Rambler and I recently took a trip to visit the Ramblers-in-law.  While out & about, eating and shopping were a must.  A yummy cafe that ALSO has a shop inside?  Yes, please!  :)
There's an excited future grandmother out there who got baby a Sleep Sheep! It is so cute and soft and makes wonderful noises.  I know our baby will love it!  (Thanks again, L!)

The Name Game

In order to avoid naming our baby the names we are currently using, I'm trying out different names and throwing out a new one to DH each day or two. After telling Mr. Rambler that I worry "the call" will come and we'll suddenly have a nameless baby, he seems to listen a bit more. Sometimes a thoughtful glance or a wince give me a quick indication on DH's opinions . . . and sometimes not.

I think we are finally whittling down the list to become the short list - at least for first names.  Hmph.  Seriously, how DO we decide together????  This is important stuff here!

Guess if we cannot decide we'll be forced to go with Peristalsis Cleopatra Phoenix or Nebuchadnezzar Robitussin Synthroid.  Oh, how I hope we can come up with something else.

When?

Waiting for Excitement?  So am I.  No news around here.  Just waiting & waiting & waiting.

Guess I'm in a kind of funk - wanting to start on the baby's room, wanting to clean out things, wanting to organize - but I can't get into it.  I feel like us becoming a family is so close, yet SO VERY FAR away.  I go into the "nursery" and look at the cute things we already have.  Clothes, stuffed animals, books, and more simply stare back at me.  Suppose they are wondering when the time will come, too.  Even the dogs go lie down in the middle of the room waiting for something exciting to happen in there.

I'm ready.  We are ready.  When will the world be ready?

Friends

In the past five years, I have made many online and IRL friends through online forums while planning our wedding, dealing with RPL, and battling IF.  Many of you are reading this right now and we have never met before.  However, I've made many wonderful, new friends in the past handful of years.

One of my newest friends is Jenn.  I met her through kimarino, who I met online years ago during RPL and IF.  While I've never met kimarino IRL, Jenn recently moved to Texas and we've had the chance to meet and develop a friendship. The first time we met, it was for a drug deal.  :)  Thankfully, I was able to give Jenn the leftover meds that my crusty eggs and bum ute wouldn't ever need again.   I hated for them to go to waste and was glad I found someone who needed them.

Usually when I meet complete strangers, I'm a bit nervous beforehand.  However, I was so excited to meet Jenn and we sat and ate and drank and chatted like old friends.  It was awesome.  We are so much alike - for those of you that know me personally, no comments please.  :)  As I walked in to the restaurant, I was greeted by my new friend bearing a bag full of this for me:

Isn't it awesome???  Our baby has a toy, a sleep sack (so cute!), some diapers, and wipies now!  Other than an outfit our friends gave us when we first found out we were pregnant, this is the first baby-related gift I've been given that didn't make me cry.  I can't begin to tell you how exciting it was!  So not only does our baby have some cool stuff now, but I have made a wonderful friend which is even better.  Love you Jenn!

For the Record

Our first daughter will NOT be named Cleopatra Peristalsis

Mr. Rambler has a warped sense of humor.  He is truly a sick, sick man who takes advantage of women under the power of anesthesia.  However, he makes me laugh.

I held a newborn tonight . . .

. . . and I didn't even cry. My uterus didn't even ache. I didn't even try to kidnap him. Of course he had a monitor on, so that would have thwarted my plans had I tried. ;)

Our friends, Mike & Sonya, and big sister Cori welcomed Baby Carter into their family today! DH and I had a great time seeing our friends and meeting their new precious son.

Me (and all of my chins - ick) getting on my baby fix. I don't look so good, but doesn't the baby make me look better??!!!

Show & Tell: Cameo

My great-grandmother and I were very close. Granny, as I called her, was my mom's grandmother, my grandmother's mom. She was truly the matriarch of the family and amazingly strong. My Granny raised four children, lost her husband too soon, survived the Great Depression, never learned to drive, buried two of her sons, gardened, cooked amazing food, and sewed anything made of fabric.

One thing Granny always bought me at Christmas was underwear. Now, as a young girl, it was terrible. Often mortified, I would open my package from Granny knowing what I would find within that pretty paper. As an adult, I would love to receive underwear every year. How I miss that gift!

As Granny laid in a hospital bed during her final days, I tried to stay by her side as much as possible. When I wasn't by her side, I was often sleeping on couch cushions on the floor of the waiting room. Granny was unable to speak, but she spoke so clearly through her eyes. I was able to put lotion on her dry skin, feed her broth, and smooth her hair - anything to make her comfortable. I also painted her nails. For years, I enjoyed doing that since her nails were always so smooth and pretty. I knew when Granny died that her fingernails needed to look pretty.

Granny held on for much longer than anyone thought she would. I was only 19, but I knew what lied ahead and called family to let them it was time to come say their goodbyes. Granny still held on, clinging to life.

Then it became time for me to head back to college. My summer was over, and I had to get back to school for sorority rush. As a rush counselor, I moved out of the sorority house and into the dorms. I could not be identified with my sorority, had no telephone, no contact with my sisters, so I could work with the girls preparing to be rushed. A few days into my new unfamiliar and somewhat uncomfortable surroundings, an early morning knock came to our dorm room's door.

I got out of bed, opened the door, and began to cry. I knew what it was. I was brought a phone, and I nervously called my mother. My Granny was gone. She died after we all left the hospital. I tried to figure out how to get home for the funeral. Then my mom recommended that I not come home. "You're busy, Granny is gone, there is nothing you can do now. Granny would want you to stay at school," my mom told me. For some reason that I will NEVER know to this day, I took my mother's advice and did not go home. In a way I still regret that decision, but my goodbyes with Granny came later.

One night, and I'm not sure when, Granny came to me in a dream. She always had a gravely, distinctive voice. In my dream, I was lying on my stomach asleep. Granny woke me up and said, "It's okay. I'm rubbing your back." And she was. She was patting my back as I slept. I know she was really there with me. And she still is. It's been over 20 years, and I know she still is with me. I pray to God and to Granny that she is rocking my babies in Heaven.

So, you're probably wondering why this blog entry is titled "Cameo." Well, here's why! When I was in high school, Granny started giving me "stuff". At the age of 16, I thought that most of it was crap. Except for one piece of jewelry she gave me. It was a cameo. Granny told me it was the last gift her husband gave her before he died. That stuck with me, and I kept the cameo with me. On my wedding day, I told my grandmother (Granny's only daughter) the story of the cameo, and asked her to pin it in my wedding dress. Granny was with me that day, just as she always is.

Sadly, my grandmother Mary will be joining her mother (my Granny) in the near future to help rock my babies. I know that they both will always be with me, and it brings me comfort to know that I will have so much love coming from above.

Show & Tell: This Being a Mom Thing is Hard!

Today's Show & Tell is a little like a confession. I'm sure that many of you don't know that I'm already a mom. I have two daughters and two sons. There are sixteen legs running around this house on a constant basis. One cat + three dogs = sixteen legs of my kids! Okay, okay . . . so they're feline and canine kids, but they are my babies. Seriously.

My youngest is Steve, our lab/pit mix baby dog. We rescued him at 4.5 weeks, so Stevie pretty much thinks (knows!) I am his only mother. And I am. :) Well, my big baby (now age 4) had surgery on Thursday. For the show part of today's S&T, you can see pictures & read more about it all in my other blog. Steve came home from the vet hospital yesterday, and he is a heartbreaking, pathetic, little sight. He went through some pretty major surgery and is in a good amount of pain & discomfort. Being his mom and all, I decided to sleep on the couch next to the palette that I made for him on the floor.

Through last night, I learned a teeny bit what it's like to be a mom. We didn't get to sleep until around 3:00am, and we were up every hour or hour and a half to potty, get water, take meds, check on him, receive licks, etc. I am absolutely wiped out today after less than five interrupted hours of sleep.

That's okay, though. It is worth it for my baby now, and the rough nights will be worth it for my human babies too. I better get some sleep before that happens, though!

I Did Something, but I Didn't Do the Other Thing

I did something . . . I held a newborn baby girl today. (Welcome Ella!) But I didn't do the other thing . . . I didn't think of ways to run from the hospital with her! :)

The best part was watching DH hold her. He's such a big guy that the baby just looked like he was enjoying a Chipotle burrito! I told him that in nine months everyone needs to come visit US and OUR BABY in the hospital. We'll see . . . guess we need to get to work!
